I do believe many Houstonians are under the impression that the sky is falling and the end is near. I, however, know what the “defrost” settings are for and used them appropriately.

We're currently at 10° with a 15~20mph north wind gusting to 40, and 8+/- inches of snow. We have an appointment to put the snow tires on the truck tomorrow morning. This morning we had to get up at 5am to tow a trailer-load of lambs to the slaughter house. On hilly roads, before the plows had been out, in white-out blowing snow conditions, on Goodyear Wrangler allseasons with nearly 30k miles on them. It was fun.

Required equipment when riding in winter:
Gloves
Hat
Wind jacket
I guess shoes and pants are required too, but I think you get my meaning.

Yep. It’s fun watching the chaos when you’ve lived where it snows more than once a decade.

I guess I didn’t watch the news, but I didn’t see much hype last night or this morning. Now, if there was ANY precipitation in the forecast school would have been cancelled.

I hate how weather goes from 0-60 here. We didn’t even get a proper fall. We went from Sauna>2 Month Monsoon>Record Lows. And I think that’s what people are really complaining about. We had no time to get ready.
And i n 2016 we didn’t even get these kinds of temperatures. We had maybe a handful of days that could be considered “winter”. I know everyone everywhere feels like their weather is completely random, but here it really feels like a roll of the dice.

I didn’t watch the news either. Working downtown, I get to hear all of the chatter as people talk about their trip into work. You would’ve thought the next ice age hit seeing everyone bundled up and hearing them complain about having to scrape their windows.

Question about towing on the heavier side in the snow: assuming your trailer has trailer electric brakes on both axles, is it a thing to disable the brakes on one axle to prevent the possibility of locking all the wheels on the trailer and then having lots of sideways fun? I’ve only towed briefly in the snow over mountain passes for spring races, and those trailers always only had brakes on less than all the axles , so there wasn’t an opportunity to try out locking up all the wheels on a trailer and seeing what it was like to control.

I suppose thats a possibility... I just turned my brake-controller sensetivity way down. Modern inertial brake-controllers can be pretty subtle whwn you need them to be. I go t the ABS going on the truck , but after turning down the sensetivity I had no (more) lock-up on the trailer... I am glad we chose the flatest possible route, both going up and down hills was a bit iffy.

My daughter actually asked this morning if they shouldn’t be closing the schools. She knows better, but hope springs eternal when you’re 12.

In texas, do folks typically run all seasons or summer tires?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:14 |

I think most people don’t think about their tires and buy either the matching stock tire or the cheapest tire that is the same size. Only enthusiasts know there’s such a thing as summer tires.

I have an InLaw from So Cal who moved to the northeast in 2012 the year we didn’t have any snow. Dec 2012 rolls around and get a light coating of ice and 15deg temps. Can’t get out of their driveway. My dad goes over “well there’s your problem”No idea that there were more than 1 type of tire.

Yeah I was curious if due to average temps new cars were sold with summer tires.

I think that most cars are sold with all-seasons since the manufacturers don’t know exactly where a car will be sold. The exception would be sports cars. I’d guess many (most?) are sold with summer performance tires.
